When selecting flame resistant fabrics for industrial protective garments, many buyers confuse NFPA 2112 and CAT 2. These two standards serve different hazards, yet dual-certified fabric delivers comprehensive safety for workers exposed to both flash fire and arc flash risks.
What is NFPA 2112?
NFPA 2112 is the standard for flame resistant clothing protecting industrial personnel from short-duration flash fires, widely required in oil & gas, petrochemical and refinery sites. Fabrics certified to NFPA 2112 must self-extinguish rapidly, no melting or dripping, and pass manikin flash fire testing to limit burn injuries during sudden fire exposure.
What does CAT 2 mean?
CAT 2 (PPE Category 2) comes from NFPA 70E for arc flash hazards. CAT 2 garments require a minimum arc rating of 8 cal/cm², shielding workers from thermal energy released by electrical arc flash events in power maintenance and electrical workshops.
Important note: NFPA 2112 certification does not automatically equal CAT 2 arc rating. A fabric must pass separate tests to earn both certifications.
